Clinical Observations including RESTORE2/NEWS2 (National Early Warning Score)

Session Includes:

  • Assessment of Respiration: Brief overview of lungs; internal and external respiration; oxygen content of air; 'normal rates'; measuring respiratory rate; observing the patient
  • Pulse Oximetry: What is pulse oximetry? Normal Range; Factors affecting the reading; Measuring the pulse oximetry
  • Manual Pulse: Normal range; factors affecting the pulse; capillary refill test; measuring the pulse
  • Blood Pressure: Equipment; cuff size; Systolic v Diastolic; palpation for manual BP; automatic machine; recording result
  • Recording Temperature: Body temperature and Pyrexia - disposable and tympanic thermometers
  • Recording and Reporting: RESTORE2/NEWS2 (includes SBAR)

Blood Glucose Monitoring and Administration of Subcutaneous Insulin

Session Includes:

  • Legislation and good practice
  • Diabetes: a brief overview of diabetes type 1 and type 2; how it might be managed
  • Blood Glucose Monitoring: equipment and procedure; results
  • Subcutaneous injection of insulin: Policy, anaphylaxis, anatomy of skin and injection sites; preparation of patient and equipment; giving the injection; consent; how to inject insulin; use of prefilled pens; recording results

Intramuscular (IM) Injection Technique

Session Includes:

  • Legislation and good practice
  • Administration of IM injection: Contraindications; Anatomy and physiology; Identify injection site; Equipment; Preparation for administration
  • Practical session on mannequin arm
  • These are just training sessions and competencies will need to be signed off in practice

Practice Supervisor

The Practice Supervisor's role is to support and supervise nursing and midwifery students in the practice learning environment.

The Practice Supervisor portfolio will need to be signed off by a Practice Assessor within the employee’s organisation.
