Thursday 17 March 2016. A Physiotherapy Apprentice employed by CSH Surrey has been named Level 3 Clinical Apprentice of the Year at the annual Health Education England regional apprenticeship awards, which were held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Crawley.
Tillie Hales, who works within CSH Surrey's inpatient therapy team at Epsom General Hospital, joined CSH Surrey in July 2015 straight after finishing college. She was nominated by her line manager, physiotherapist Lavinia Rizzacasa.
Tillie says: "I'm really happy to have won my category! I didn't get into university to study my dream career of physiotherapy. I therefore applied for the apprenticeship role at CSH Surrey because I didn't get enough clinical experience during my education to start as a physio technician straight away. The apprenticeship has allowed me to work in the hospital environment while being able to learn formally about the role at the same time. I have to complete mandatory units similar to the training we do anyway to provide NHS services. It's been interesting learning about dementia, for example, because I see this almost everyday on the wards and it helps me to progress my knowledge as a physiotherapy technician to get the best of my abilities. CSH Surrey has supported my decision to apply for university in 2016 and completing the apprenticeship has given me core knowledge and provided a stepping stone for me to progress in my chosen career. I'm really happy that I chose this pathway and am thankful to CSH Surrey for providing me support throughout my journey so far."
Physiotherapist, Lavinia Rizzacasa, who nominated Tillie, says: "Tillie has been a true asset to my team since she started working with us. She has approached new challenges such as juggling work and study with dedication and a positive attitude. She epitomises the Apprenticeship scheme in that she is extremely eager to learn and progress her development with a clear direction. She has used her initiative and asked for help with interview skills. She has used these wisely and we are at the point where she is being offered places at university. The occupational therapists have commented on Tillie’s overall professional approach and her ability to embrace the importance of involving all disciplines in rehabilitation. Tillie is extremely conscientious and she always gives her best. She has developed a natural aptitude to think on her feet and maintain a calm attitude when difficulties arise. She shows a rare quality in that I have seen even the most challenging patients respond to her. She is a inspiration and example to others. The Apprenticeship scheme has only enriched her performance. I feel the scheme has been a process of discovery for Tillie and that she is acquiring essential professional and life skills to ensure she reaches her dream of becoming a physiotherapist. I have seen her develop and grow into a valued member of my team. We are proud to have her work alongside us and represent CSH Surrey."
