22 October 2014. Surrey’s young and vulnerable mothers are set to benefit from extra health and emotional support through an innovative programme that helps first-time teenage mums and their babies.
CSH Surrey, which has been providing NHS nursing and therapy services in mid Surrey since 2006, has been chosen by NHS England to deliver the programme for the whole of Surrey. Surrey is a priority area for the programme and up to 100 young families are expected to benefit in the first year.
The Family Nurse Partnership (FNP) Programme supports young women aged 19 or under who are expecting their first baby early in pregnancy until their child is two years old. The voluntary programme provides on-going intensive, structured support from specialist nurses who work with mums to ensure they get the right advice for themselves and their baby.
The evidence-based programme works by identifying young mothers-to-be who could benefit at an early stage. A dedicated family nurse will use the programme methods and materials to work with mothers, as well as their partners and other family members, if the mother chooses. Family nurses support them to have a healthy pregnancy, prepare for labour, support their baby to learn and grow as well as to plan their own life goals.
Helen Hamilton, FNP Supervisor at CSH Surrey says: “It’s a real privilege for our team, as specially trained nurses, to be part of the FNP programme.
“A child’s experiences during their first years of life have a long-lasting impact on their future health, relationships and happiness. Our Family Nurses will offer first-time teenage mothers practical advice, help and emotional support to develop their confidence and skills so they can develop as a family. They will build close, supportive relationships with the mum and see her frequently, starting early in pregnancy until their baby’s second birthday. We also encourage partners and family to get involved as this can have a positive impact on health, development and wellbeing.
“The rewards and benefits for the mums and families are really exciting and we are delighted to bring FNP to young families in Surrey.”
Fiona Harris, Head of Public Health Commissioning, NHS England (Surrey & Sussex), adds:
“NHS England is delighted to be working with CSH Surrey on this innovative programme. The future outcomes for both children and adults are strongly influenced by factors in pregnancy and first years of life, and this exciting programme offers some of the most vulnerable babies and young parents a better chance in life.
“It is a tried and tested programme and we are hopeful it will make a real difference to young mothers in difficult circumstances. The Surrey team joins other long standing teams in neighbouring East Sussex, West Sussex and Brighton, and we also already have FNP sites in Southampton and Portsmouth, with a new team launching to cover Hampshire later in the year."
The Family Nurse Partnership programme also offers benefits for close working across the community midwifery and health visiting professions. Experience gained in developing better relationships with families through the programme will help improve the way they are also supported by wider services.
