Delivering high quality care relies on employing skilled and well-trained colleagues but also on colleagues who are personally motivated to provide safe, effective care and positive service user experiences. CSH Surrey therefore takes its responsibility seriously for training and supporting the development of its colleagues.
CSH Surrey prides itself of the wide range of training and development opportunities that it provides in addition to the Statutory and Mandatory training courses required by law.
We believe in ‘growing our own’ so aim to support colleagues to follow career pathways and achieve their career ambitions within both clinical and non clinical roles. CSH Surrey is playing a leading role in bringing together local stakeholders/partners, NHSE and higher education providers to develop community-focused training and ongoing continuous professional development (CPD) opportunities to ensure we will be aligning to the NHS 10 year plan.
Most of our training is delivered in-house by either CSH Surrey colleagues or external trainers. Training courses are booked through our online system through which colleagues can view their training requirements, records and compliance.

The apprenticeships we are able to offer include;
Describe your work journeyI started at CSH in May 2022 as HR administrator, this led to me wanting to get a wider insight into HR and to learn more.
How did you find out about apprenticeship?A colleague was doing a level 3 CIPD and I’d heard people talking about the apprenticeship scheme.
Describe your apprenticeship journeyI approached learning and development to find out more information about apprenticeships and what I needed to do it. I then raised in a 1-2-1 and my PDR and my line manager approved it. The paperwork was straight forward, assisted by learning and development.
The apprenticeship onboarding was very smooth. After completing an induction, it was straight into the first assignment.
The online learning sessions and activities are incredible. In addition, there are set on the job hours, which is a part of all apprenticeships.
How is it going at the moment? The people running the online sessions are varied and get the point across in different ways. There is always someone available if you need them. They are very accommodating
The other people on my apprenticeship come from a range of backgrounds and organisations.
My colleagues at work have also been very supportive and generous with their time and sharing knowledge.
Name your three favourite things about doing the apprenticeship
Are there any negatives? As I have been out of education for so long, it was quite a daunting thing e.g. writing first assignment. I had to relearn how to do this. But otherwise there have been only positives.
Where would you like to be in five years with your career?I’d like to have reached HR business partner level. I enjoy being able to help people when they need it. I would like to be happy in whatever job I’m in.
Do you think you would do another apprenticeship in the future?Yes. I’d like to do another CIPD level. I’m aiming for level 5, possibly level 7 CIPD.
What advice would you give to people thinking about doing an apprenticeship?Do it! Don’t worry or stress about it. You will find yourself along the way. Any short-term stress will benefit yourself in the long run.
Describe your work journeyI was working as a healthcare assistant. After six months I began training in additional competencies including wound care, catheter care and taking blood tests. I saw the great care that the community nursing team gave to my nan, who was receiving palliative care and this made me want to become a qualified nurse myself.
How did you find out about apprenticeship?I came to CSH from another job where I couldn’t do an apprenticeship. I applied for work at CSH, wanting to do a nurse apprenticeship and mentioned this in my interview. My manager was very supportive, and career progression is encouraged here.
Describe your apprenticeship journeyI spoke to my manager, and they helped me fill out an expression of interest form for learning and development to review. I had a joint interview with the university and learning and development. I heard back the same day with a conditional offer. It was quite a lengthy process, but everything went smoothly and I was able to start with the next cohort of students, which takes place twice a year.
How is it going at the moment?Really good! I’m managing my workload well. There’s lots of support available from the university and learning and development when you need it, and my manager and work colleagues are also very supportive.
The other students are all lovely and it helps that they are similar to me in that they have had some work and life experiences, not coming straight from college to do the degree. We help each other out.
Learning and development have been fantastic, arranging my clinical placements and, when I needed to change one of these, they made this very straight forward. The NHS trusts where I have had my placements are full of praise for learning and development and how good they are at communicating with them.
Are there any negatives?Managing workload when you have to work as well as study can be a challenge. Other full-time students have a dedicated day off to catch up, whereas I need to work.
I did find that as I had been out of education for some time it took a while to readjust to learning and studying.
I would say that it is so important you maintain a healthy work life balance and keep some time for yourself, so things don’t get too overwhelming.
Where would you like to be in five years with your career?Definitely a qualified nurse. At the moment, my aim is to work in palliative care.
What advice would you give to people thinking about or starting an apprenticeship?Take every day as it comes. Just look at the week ahead so things don’t seem too overwhelming. Enjoy every minute and the new experiences you get. Make the most of the new relationship with people.
Having a supportive manager really helps and I’ve been very fortunate with my manager.
